For Carl Theodor Dreyer
Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889 – 1968) was a Danish director considered among the greatest exponents of world cinema. My meeting with him was fortuitous and dazzling. I therefore decided to dedicate an entire series of works to him.
Among his not extensive cinematographic production I chose a silent film from 1928 entitled The Passion of Joan of Arc.
Watching the film online, I selected twelve frames that I considered suitable to describe the entire film, which lasts approximately 110 minutes. I gave the title to this selection of frames, which were the inspiration for subsequent works: Stil Image: Joan of Arc.
I reproduced the still image of each scene on paper in such a way as to make the drawing look like a photocopy. A meticulous reproduction of the shot in rigorous black and white. Like in the movie. Once the drawing was finished, I made significant changes to the image in an attempt to create an ideal bridge between a Master of the past and a contemporary artist. An attempt at distant dialogue between the premises of an ideal world and the epilogue of ideality in the contemporary world.
